Topic homework- Roman bridges!

1)    Use the internet or other sources to search for a range of Roman bridges, then answer the following questions:
- What are the key features? What shapes do you notice?
- How might they have been built? What materials were used?
- Many of the bridges still stand today. What do you think made the bridges strong?

Challenge: Can you find out what a keystone is and describe why it was important in Roman bridge construction?

  1. I have noticed that the bridges have cuboids and ovals.

They have been built by ancient {old} romans.

The materials are stone and iron.

I think stones and roman professionals made it strong.

Keystones are important because they make bridges not collapse.

  2. Roman Bridges!

    The key features are:
    * They were very durable!
    * The Roman bridges had an arch structure!

    The shapes I notice are:

    - it is the shape of a protractor!

    They were built by:

    > I believe the Roman Bridges were built by hand!

    The materials were:

    . Stone
    . Concrete!

    The bridges were strong because...

    1. They were built well and carefully!
    2. They used the basic arch feature to make them strong!

    Did you know?

~ That The largest Roman bridge ever built was the Trajan bridge!
~ It was built over the river Danube!
~ It was over 3700 feet long and 62 feet high.

  3. With the arrival of Roman Empire, bridge building techniques were revolutionized with the introduction of the amazing arch. Using the arch Romans enabled the force from top to bottom of the arch.I think this cleaver shape keeps up the stone or brick bridges.

    What is a keystone?
The keystone is the topmost stone in the arch. The keystone helped to distribute the weight down the side supporting blocks of the columns.

  4. The key features of a roman bridge is mainly the arches but the stone and concrete kept it together. The shapes you notice are the arches. They built it using the arch as a foundation. They use stone and concrete. The arches made the bridges so strong because it is a very strong base.

  5. Romans were very famous for their roads and bridges but what were they made out of ?. Roman bridges were made out of stone, wood and concrete and they were the first people to use concrete. The shapes of Roman bridges were arches. What made the bridge strong was the arches which made the bridge more secure because they transfer weight. A keystone is a stone at the summit of an arch, locking the whole thing together.

  6. A key feature is the arches in the bridge and the shapes that I noticed are the loops and rectangular bricks. The material used were bricks. They were probably built by sticking the bricks together and placing them in that shape. I think they moulded the weight to keep it strong and carry huge weights.

  7. Roman bridges were made out of 5 different layers:
    .compact sand or dry earth
    .statumen (smashed rock)
.radus (gravel in cement or mortar)
    .nucleas (cemented gravel and sand)
    .summon dorsum (large stone slabs)

I noticed that most Roman bridges were arch shapes and it looked like there were bridges on top of each other to create one big bridge. I think that they were built by hand since Romans didn't have any machines to build them with. the materials used were probably just stone and cement. I am not sure what made them strong it was probably the materials that were used.

challenge: the keystone is the stone that holds everything together if you move the keystone the whole bridge would collapse.
