Literacy

We will be continuing our work on recounts this week. Imagine you are Red Riding Hood or Goldilocks and write a diary entry based on events in the story. Remember to write in the first person, use the past tense, use time connectives and write about your feelings and responses to the events. Can you start a sentence with a subordinate clause? Eg, Although my mother had told me not to speak to strangers, I answered the wolf’s questions.

Topic- to be done on the blog

We will be investigating the Mayans in the last two weeks of this half term.  Where did the Mayans live and in what time period? As our focus is on ‘achievements’, can you find out what the Mayans are most famous for?

Science

Last week in Science we investigated solubility and found out that salt dissolves in water to form a solution. Can you find out how we could reverse the change and separate the salt from the water?

This week we will be looking at recounts in literacy. Choose an important event that has happened to you or to someone that you know. Write a newspaper report about what happened. Remember to include: a headline, an introduction (Who? What? Why? Where? When? How?), conjunctions and a concluding paragraph.

Topic- to be done on the blog

This week we will be looking at the greatest achievements of the Iron Age. What, in your opinion, was the greatest achievement? Please explain your reasoning for your choice on the blog.  

 

Science

Can you draw a simple electrical circuit and explain how it works (using a battery, wire and light bulb)? How would you turn out the light? How would you add a switch?

Last week, we were writing a non-chronological report for an alien visiting Chatsworth Primary School. Now imagine you are the alien. Write a non-chronological report about life on your planet, Zorg. Remember to try and use all of the features of a non-chronological report, especially using connectives and generalisers.

Topic- to be done on the blog

This week we will be looking at the Iron Age and thinking about how their lives were different to life in 2015. What can you find out about Iron Age life? Write a comment on your class blog.

 

Science

See the concept cartoon on the other side of the sheet. What do you think? Do you agree with any of the children in the picture? Write down an explanation of who you think is right and why.

Maths Challenge!


Maths Week!

It is Maths Week next week! We will be completing a Maths project throughout the week, completing a Maths trail around the school and taking part in a Maths workshop. I will also be posting Maths challenges for you to try at home- watch this space!

Word of the day!

5MD have started having a 'Word of the Day' which we are sharing with each other and encouraging each other to use.

Thursday's word was GARGANTUAN and Friday's word was IMPECCABLE.

Can you write some sentences that include these words?

Imagine that an alien has arrived at Chatsworth, knowing absolutely nothing about school life. Write a non-chronological report about our school. Remember to include a title, and introduction, subheadings and facts. Can you use any of the engaging adverbs we discussed this week to start some of your sentences? Eg, Interestingly, the school library is on a London bus!

Science- to be done on the blog

Some materials are thermal conductors and some are thermal insulators. Can you find out what this means and find some examples of materials which are thermal insulators and some which are thermal conductors. Choose a material that you think would be good to put around your cup of tea to keep it warm and explain your choice.
