Remembrance Day....

It is Remembrance Day on Wednesday, 11th November. Why is the poppy used as a symbol of Remembrance Day. What are we remembering? Why do we wear a poppy?

Have a look at the photos below. Who do you think this person could be? How old do you think he was when the photo was taken? Where do you think he went and in what year? What might have happened to him? I will tell you some stories about him on Wednesday.

Thanks to all for your interest in this post and for listening to the stories about what happened to my Grandad so intently. It was good to hear some of your stories too.  If you have any more stories, questions or thoughts then please do post them here. I'm sure you were all thinking of those who have suffered the consequences of war today, as well as being thankful for all the things we have and take for granted, that others have been denied. The two minute silence we observed today was a good opportunity to do that. Special thanks to Mr Farnell for playing The Last Post so beautifully.

Literacy:

Read the first few lines of the poem on the next page.  Please write the next two verses of the poem. Can you use a simile, metaphor and some alliteration? Remember to use exciting vocabulary!

Our new topic is Ancient Greece. Next week we will be learning about a very important man who revolutionised medicine in Ancient Greece. Can you find out who he was and some information about what he achieved?

If you had a cold in Ancient Greek times, how might it have been cured?

If you had a fever in Ancient Greek times, how might it have been cured?

Science:

Our new topic is ‘Changing Materials’ which will involve us looking at the properties of  different materials. Can you explain what the best material would be in these circumstances and WHY:

1)    You need to build a house   2) You need something to wear on a cold day      3) You need something to wrap a glass in when moving house.

The Egyptians were great builders. How did they build the pyramids? How long did it take? How many people worked on them? Why did they build them? What were they for?

 

 

 

Pharaoh Khufu was considered to be one of the greatest pyramids builders. Can you research his achievements.

Next week we will be holding a debate in Topic about the Egyptian pharaoh, Ramses The Great. Was he a great pharaoh? Try to find three reasons that suggest he was and three that suggest he wasn’t.

We are beginning a new topic next week on Journalistic writing. Please write your own news report about an exciting event that has happened to you recently. If you need inspiration, look at some newspapers to get a feel for how journalists write about events.

Next week we are going to be finding out about the lives of famous females in Ancient Egyptian times.

You will need to do some research and then solve the anagrams !

Science:

We will be looking at the ‘Phases of the Moon’ next week. If we have some clear nights this week have a look at the shape of the moon. What does it look like? Do some sketches or take a photo to show the class. If you can’t take a photo then print a photo from Google images. Check the BBC Stargazing Video Clips. Why does the moon look different at different times of the year?

Literacy: Stories with Mystery and Suspense.

 Please read the paragraph below. Can you edit it and up level it to improve it. Think about your Suspense Toolkit.  (You can change as much as you like BUT you must keep the main characters the same!)

 

Literacy.   A  suspense story.

 

It was night time. It was raining. The cat saw a fox. He was frightened. He ran away and hid. The fox looked for the cat.

He didn’t know where it had gone. The cat stayed quiet. “I hope he doesn’t see me” said the cat.

 

The fox went away. The cat looked to see if it was safe. The rain was getting worse. He didn’t want to go out in the rain, but he wanted to get somewhere safe.

 

Edit and up level the story and think of an ending!  Can you give your story a title?

 

Science:
