Homework due Friday, 15th April

Homework: Friday 18^th March 2016

This homework is all due by Friday 15^th April 2016

Please bring in your boxes and resources on MONDAY 21^st March in order to make our Viking ships.

Monday is also Science dress up day- donate £1 to come to school dressed as something scientific.

 

Mathematics:   Please let your class teacher know if you cannot access Mathletics. There are Mathletics activities set as homework each week.

 

Reading: You are also expected to read each day. Please record what you have read in your Reading Record each day (i.e. how long you have read or how many pages you have read) and get an adult to sign it. Reading Records will be checked after the Easter holidays.

 

Science:

Next term we will be studying forces. Can you find out what a force is, along with some examples of forces? Have a look at the cartoon on the reverse of this sheet. Why did the apple fall? Do you agree with the girl in the blue hat? Explain why/why not. Why did the apple stop rolling?

 

 

 

Literacy:

 

After Easter, we will be looking at biographies. What is a biography? What are the features of a biography? Write a biography of your life or find out about the life of your favourite author, sporting star or historical figure and write a biography for them. This should be your own work!

 

Topic:

 

Our next topic is the terrible Tudors! Your task is to find out about the kind of food they ate, what they wore and the kind of activities they might have enjoyed. Use this information to create a leaflet advertising a Tudor banquet. Think carefully about the date of the banquet, who might be hosting it and where it will be held. What will the dress code be and can you provide a menu? Have fun!

1066 is a very famous date in English history. Can you find out why? What happened?  Who did it involve?  What started it?  How did it end?  What did it mean for Britain?

The Vikings were another group of people who invaded Britain. Where did they come from? How did they get here?

Research the design of Vikings long ships in preparation for our Design Technology project.

What were they made of?

How big were they?

How did they move?

What were they used for?

Our next topic is the Anglo Saxons. They invaded Britain. What can you find out about them?  You may want to ‘Google’ about all/some of the following:

•     WHO - Who they were and where they came from. Why did they come to Britain? What did they do? What was their biggest achievement?

•     RELIGION - Which religion did they follow? What did they then become?

What is a monastery? Where were the most famous ones? Anglo Saxon Saints – St Augustine, St Aidan, St Bede and St Cuthbert.

•     ART / BUILDINGS – What kind of art and buildings did they leave behind?

Chick Diary!

What an exciting start to the term! Our new Science topic is 'Life Cycles' and we had a special delivery on Monday: 10 eggs almost ready to hatch. We have studied the life cycle of birds and explored the inside and outside of unfertilised eggs so that we understand how they can help a chick to grow and develop.

Today we discussed how most chicken eggs hatch 21 days after fertilisation. We received them on day 19 and they looked like this:

We looked at them this morning (Day 20) and could see a few small cracks in some of the eggs. We could even hear the odd chirp from inside the eggs!

By the end of the day one of the cracks had got bigger. I don't think it will be long before we have some hatchlings! 

Day 21: We have some hatchlings! When we arrived at school this morning, seven out of the ten eggs had hatched and we were lucky enough to watch the eighth hatch just before lunch.

The chicks are getting bigger!

Art Week and Book Fortnight

We are really enjoying Art Week and Book Fortnight in Year 5! We have been reading Roald Dahl's 'Matilda' and have been sketching in the style of Quentin Blake. I am amazed by some of the astounding artwork I've seen.

Today we started creating characters and scenes for our animations based on 'Matilda'. I can't wait to see the finished products. What are you enjoying the most about Art Week and Book Fortnight?
